An earlier version of this essay has appeard on CSEAS Newsletter Number 65, Spring 2012, pp 21-4 The role of colonialism has often been overlooked when examining the merging of musical genres. Yet in the case of gamelan (traditional music of Java and Bali) there are some interesting conjunctions with western classical music.
